T5 vs T8 vs T12 Tubes – What’s the Difference?
Introduction
When upgrading or replacing fluorescent tubes with LED tubes, you’ll notice certain specifications in the fixtures: T5, T8, and T12. These numbers aren’t arbitrary—they relate to the fixture’s efficiency and compatibility. Today, Toppo Lighting will explain the differences between these LED linear lights to help you find the most suitable option.
What Does "T" Stand For?
In LED lighting, the "T" stands for "Tubular," referring to the shape of the tube. The number indicates the tube’s diameter, measured in eighths of an inch:
T12 Tube: 12/8 inches in diameter (1.5 inches)
T8 Tube: 8/8 inches in diameter (1 inch)
T5 Tube: 5/8 inches in diameter (0.625 inches)
These different diameters affect light distribution patterns. Larger tubes produce a wider beam, while slimmer tubes offer more focused lighting.
Comparison of T5, T8, and T12 LED Tubes
Comparison | T12 LED Linear Tube | T8 LED Tube | T5 LED Linear Tube |
Diameter | 1.5 in (12/8") | 1 in (8/8") | 0.625 in (5/8") |
Power (vs. Fluorescent) | 18-20W (replaces 34W fluorescent) | 14-18W (replaces 32W fluorescent) | 10-14W (replaces 28W fluorescent) |
Light Output | 1900-2200 lumens | 2000-2400 lumens | 1800-2200 lumens |
Efficiency (lm/W) | Medium (~90-110 lm/W) | Higher (~110-130 lm/W) | Highest (~130-160 lm/W) |
Fixture Compatibility | Only fits T12 or requires adapter for T8 | Directly fits T8; some can be modified for T5 | Requires dedicated T5 fixtures |
Ballast Requirement | Compatible with old magnetic ballasts or bypass | Usually requires electronic ballast or bypass | Mostly direct drive (no ballast needed) |
Best For | Retrofitting old T12 fixtures; low-usage areas | Mainstream commercial/industrial upgrades; cost-effective | New high-efficiency lighting; compact spaces |
CRI (Color Rendering Index) | 80+ | 80-90 | 85-95 (premium models can exceed CRI>90) |
How to Decide?
Beyond the above details, consider these factors when choosing:
Existing Infrastructure: If you’re not planning a full lighting system upgrade, check whether your current fixtures support the new LED tubes.
Usage Patterns: For high-usage areas like retail displays or task lighting, we recommend more energy-efficient T5 tubes.
Light Quality Needs: If you want the best balance between efficiency and light output, T8 LED tubes are a great choice.
T8 LED tubes are widely used for most lighting applications due to their strong performance. However, T5 tubes are better suited for energy savings or space-constrained environments, while T12 tubes are mainly for retrofitting old fixtures.
Toppo believes understanding these differences will help you make the right choice. Based on your needs, we also offer high-CRI, energy-efficient T5 & T8 linear tubes, as well as customized LED lighting solutions to upgrade your commercial and workspace lighting.
