What is a RF Slip Ring and What are the Types?

 Introduction

In applications such as radar, antenna, and wireless technologies, rotating devices need to transmit high-frequency signals (such as radio frequency and microwave signals) between the rotating part and the fixed part. The traditional wiring method will cause the device to get entangled with the cable when it rotates, and the conventional slip rings are difficult to carry high-frequency signals, resulting in signal attenuation and increased interference. To address this issue, RF slip rings have been designed. In this article, ByTune will introduce the definition, types, and applicable applications of RF slip rings.

What is an RF Slip Ring?

An RF slip ring, also known as a high-frequency rotating connector or a microwave rotating joint. Different from traditional electrical slip rings, RF slip rings are specifically designed to transmit radio frequency (RF), microwave, and even millimeter-wave signals. They usually adopt a coaxial or waveguide design to reduce signal reflection and electromagnetic interference. This enables the signal to maintain low loss, a low voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR), and stable resistance during the transmission process, avoiding distortion or interruption.

What are the Types of RF Slip Rings?

According to different transmission media, frequency ranges, and applications, RF slip rings can be mainly classified into the following types:

(1) Coaxial RF Slip Rings

Coaxial RF slip rings are designed for rotating coaxial cables and are suitable for the transmission of medium and high-frequency wireless signals (covering DC to 18 GHz). These slip rings are relatively compact and suitable for applications that require a small size, such as radar, satellite communication, and medical imaging devices. They can be divided into:

Single-channel coaxial slip rings: These only transmit a single radio frequency signal.

Multi-channel coaxial slip rings: These have multiple coaxial channels and can transmit multiple signals simultaneously.

(2) Waveguide RF Slip Rings

Waveguide slip rings, also known as waveguide rotating joints, are commonly found in high-power microwave transmission applications, such as satellite communication, radar systems, and spacecraft. They use a metal waveguide structure instead of coaxial cables to reduce signal loss. Waveguide slip rings can transmit signals in higher frequency bands (such as the Ku band, Ka band, and above, up to 40 GHz).

(3) Fiber Optic Rotary Joints (FORJ)

Strictly speaking, FORJs do not belong to traditional RF slip rings. They are used for high-speed optical signal transmission, such as in fiber optic communication and military equipment, and can replace some high-frequency RF applications.

(4) Hybrid RF Slip Rings

This is a type of hybrid slip ring that integrates coaxial, waveguide, or power transmission channels at the same time. They are used in complex systems that need to transmit radio frequency signals, power, and data simultaneously, such as unmanned driving radar, robots, and aerospace equipment.

Where Do We Use RF Slip Rings?

(1) Radar and Military Equipment:

Military radars such as phased array radars and early warning radars

Missile guidance systems and UAV communication links

(2) Satellite and Aerospace Communication: Satellite antennas, space stations, and deep space probes

(3) Medical Imaging Equipment: The rotating gantries of CT (Computed Tomography) and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) devices

(4) Industrial Automation and Robotics:

The rotating joints in industrial robotic arms and automated inspection equipment

The wireless communication modules of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs)

(5) Wireless Communication Base Stations: Some intelligent antenna systems (such as 5G Massive MIMO)
