What Should We Know When We Install the Slip Rings?

1. Overview

Conductive slip rings are components that transmit electrical energy, video, control and other signals in rotating equipment. Improper installation of them may lead to signal interruption, poor contact and even equipment failure. So, do you know what needs to be noted when installing them?

2. Main Installation Methods

Conventional conductive slip rings can be divided into two installation methods: through-hole installation and flange installation. Among them:

(1) Flange Installation

The flange installation of a conductive slip ring means that the slip ring is connected and installed with the equipment through its own flange structure. The flange is a disc-shaped edge part with mounting holes on it. These holes are designed to be fixed to the corresponding mounting positions on the equipment.

Structurally, this flange is usually integrated with or tightly connected to the housing of the slip ring. ByTune supports designing corresponding flange plates according to the installation positions provided by customers. After customers receive the products, they can complete the installation by connecting them to the equipment's rotating disk.

(2) Hollow Shaft Installation

This is to install the slip ring by sleeving its hollow shaft onto the rotating shaft of the equipment. This method is only applicable to the slip ring structure with a hole in the center, and there is enough space inside the hole for the rotating shaft of the equipment to pass through.

During installation, the hollow shaft of the slip ring closely cooperates with the rotating shaft, and the synchronous rotation of the two is achieved through methods such as key connection, set screws or interference fit. At this time, ByTune's slip ring will rotate continuously with the rotating shaft and avoid the problem of cable entanglement.

3. Precautions During Installation

Now, ByTune will discuss with you the common problems that need to be paid attention to when installing conductive slip rings:

  • Place the slip rings on the appropriate shafts. Usually, this refers to the tail shaft or propeller shaft, rather than the intermediate shaft.
  • Place them in a location away from water splashing to prevent damage to the brushes.
  • Properly align the rotor and stator of the slip ring to reduce the lateral load and stress on the bearings.
  • Use flexible couplings at the rotating end or fixed end to accommodate slight misalignment.
  • Check whether the torque of the installation screws is appropriate.
  • Carefully arrange the wires and use suitable cable glands to reduce wire wear.
  • Protect the conductors at both ends of the slip ring and don't damage them. Otherwise, the transmission of current signals will be affected.
  • The slip ring should not be used for bearing loads and should not be squeezed by heavy objects.
  • Consider using special materials or coatings suitable for harsh environments.

The above are some precautions for the installation of standard conductive slip rings. However, for customized models or slip rings with special structures, there are also some differences. If you have any doubts, please feel free to consult ByTune's technical staff at any time!
